A 50 kW turbine is used to recover the hydraulic energy lost in the pressure reduction valve at the inlet of the urban water network. A highly variable flow rate and a constant outlet pressure require the design of a variable speed power plant. The turbine is in fact a pump running backwards and the generator is a standard component. A frequency converter with a wide input voltage range has been developed for photovoltaic, wind and small hydropower plants.
