Résumé

This is part of a case series. The Royal Savoy Hotel had a long history in Lausanne (Switzerland). Having been closed for several years, it was reopened in 2015 under the General Management of Alain Kropf, a seasoned hospitality professional with an international career and native of Lausanne. The case describes how Kropf built his management team to launch the Hotel and built it into a leading position in Lausanne against long-standing competitors, noted for its warm and welcoming atmosphere. While riding a wave of success, Kropf's leadership was severely challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing uncertainty typified by more than a year of closures and re-openings. The case provides details about how Kropf kept in touch with his leadership team and hotel staff, how he managed the closures and re-openings. The case follows Kropf during the pandemic, illustrating how a leader acts authentically and ethically under crisis and becomes resilient in the face of ever-changing circumstances that have hit the hospitality sector particularly strongly.
