The policitization of senior civil service is most often considered through the lense of formal policitization, which consists in substituting the usual merit criteria with political criteria when it comes to career management. However, few studies have addressed the way formal policitization conditions functional politicization, (Fonctional politicization is the way political issues are taken into account in policy decisions made by civil servants). In this article, we analyse the impact of a formal juridical measure which allows to dismiss senior public servants in local governments for political reasons on the way these public servants perceive their role in the design of policy. We have analysed the perceptions of French senior public servants in local governments whose position has been done away with following the local elections that took place in 2015. We show that the implementation of the formal measure acts as a reminder of the political nature of the position of senior local public servant.
