Activity-based working analyzed : a disruptive new open work environment and its effects on a new product development organization

Villarroel, Andrei (School of Management Fribourg, HES-SO // University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland)

This paper offers a comparative study of workplace innovation looking at a new kind of open work environment referred as Activity-Based Working (ABW). Specifically for a state-of-the-art ABW work environment, we unveil distinct gains in team productivity, counter-balancing significant losses in individual productivity — relative to traditional office and cubicle workplaces. These findings assert the existence of a fundamental managerial trade-off in workplace innovation, between creating a work environment to support individual outcomes versus social outcomes.
