The commmune of Vetaux is situated in the Canton of Vaud in Switzerland. Its position between the lake and the mountains has made it a popular route for transporting goods and travellers. In fact, a national motorway, a national trunk road and the railway all pass between the cliffs and Lake Geneva. This area is unstable due to its composition of karst and due to the presence of cliffs. Despite this, structures have been created to allow for the passage of people, goods and electricity. This infrastructure is vulnerable because of rock falls, surface landslides and possible mud slides. Protection measures have been put in place to counter these dangers but these are often damaged as they are not adequately dimensioned. If an exceptional event were to take place, all the lines of communication would be blocked.
