Depuis une trentaine d’années, dans le cadre des politiques urbaines, de nombreuses associations réalisent des projets de théâtre visant à favoriser la « participation des habitants » des quartiers populaires. Basé sur une enquête ethnographique franco-italienne, cet article analyse les processus de politisation discursive au sein de ces associations. Si le théâtre participatif constitue un cadre a priori propice à susciter des discussions « animées par l’esprit public », ces processus se voient entravés par un ensemble de contraintes, émanant pour la plupart des financeurs publics.

For about thirty years now, in the context of urban policies, number of theater associations carry out projects in working-class neighborhoods providing active participation of their inhabitants. Based on an ethnographic survey in France and Italy, this article highlights the discursive politicisation processes within these associations. Participatory theatre provides a framework a priori conducive to generate “public spirited-political conversations”. However, these processes can be hampered by a set of public funding constraints.

Theatervereine in benachteiligten Stadtteilen: zwischen Politisierung und Massnahmen der öffentlichen Hand. Zusammenfassung: Seit ungefähr dreissig Jahren führen zahlreiche Vereine im Rahmen der Stadtentwicklungspolitik Theaterprojekte durch, mit dem Ziel, die «Bürgerbeteiligung» in benachteiligten Stadtteilen zu fördern. Ausgehend von einer ethnografischen Untersuchung in Frankreich und Italien wird in diesem Artikel der Politisierungsprozess in diesen Vereinen untersucht. Das partizipative Theater bietet grundsätzlich einen geeigneten Rahmen, um allgemeine und polarisierende Debatten anzuregen, allerdings wird dieser Prozess durch eine Reihe von Einschränkungen gehemmt, die grösstenteils auf die öffentliche Finanzierung zurückzuführen sind.
